Xbox Live vs PSN

The question to be answering is not on deciding the best online experience, but why haven't xbox and playstation cooperated to combine the online experience under one roof. How awesome would it be to be able to play against friend who have different consoles. I know this is an idealist point of view but if the industries main goal was to please the gaming community then this would be the dawn of a new age when it comes to the next gen of gaming.

I disagree, PSN is free and yeah the customer support at Sony is pretty much non-existent, but fwiw I people keep saying there's so much lag and so many bugs but that's history now. Now, the only way the PS3 online experience will suck is if you're router/connection sucks.

I disagree with this website every thing that was mentioned that the XBL has IS includid with mine. theres 20gigs, 40 gigs,60 gigs,and 80 gigs and now ps3 slims. I would choose psn over XBL anyday.However, I do agree that the 2 have completely wiped the floor with the shity wii. I don't really care which one wins though, becuase I have an alienware 15x computer. which can beat ps3 xbox and wii all in the same time.

Phlash, thanks for writing on this. It is a good, brief overview of both services. I have been gaming with both the PS3 and 360 since they've come out. And in terms of console and capabilities, I think the PS3 is by far better. When it comes to titles, I would have to go with the 360. Now, that's just my opinion; and, as always, I expect both concurring and hostile responses.

However, because this column is focused on the actual online networks that each console uses, I will just detail my personal opinion on that. It pains me to admit it because I generally loathe Microsoft, but I think it got it right on this one. XBL, in my opinion, is a million times over superior to PSN. For starters, the PS3 doesn't come with any type of communications device. As a result, I find that while nearly everybody on XBL speaks, it is not uncommon for me to be in lobbies without anybody to talk to. More importantly, there is a noticeable disparity in voice quality between those gamers who actually do have headsets. Also, PSN is not at all conducive to promoting a positive and meaningful social gaming experience. It makes requesting friends, sending and reading messages (no voice!), sending game invites, tracking conversation threads, etc. much more tedious and laborious than they need to be. Where it would only take a single button or function on XBL, it takes a series of button patterns on PSN even for these basic commands. In addition, outside of Playstation Home, there isn't much by way of creating a unique profile or ID with "personality." I sometimes forget who is who, and am just left with a list of friend IDs. If it were easy to compare games or possible to view friend lists of friends, then networking and remembering who's who from what game and where would be easier.

I do see why many people gravitate towards the PS3 because PSN does not require a paid membership; and for some, it is a better deal because they don't really care about the whole social component of online gaming nor play enough to justify purchasing a regular membership. But for those gamers who enjoy the "community" aspect of online gaming, there is just no fair comparison to XBL. PSN is not even close; I was quite surprised as to how much credit Phlash gave to PSN (perhaps for the sake of not appearing grossly biased towards XBL). If Sony revamped PSN to make its interface and support more like XBL's, I'd gladly buy a subscription. It would be well worth the cost.

I own both console but I like xbox live alot better. I use my 360 for live and some gaming and my PS3 for offline and as a blu-ray player. I think I may have made my point.

I actually have both consoles, and online for both. I switched from psn to xbl because all my friends are on xbox. From my experience, xbox's online is much better than psn's because of how the chat works, and also because my friends are on it, so if you wanted to you could say im biased.... but i honestly pick xbox360 over ps3.

Everybody knows that xbox live is better ps network. Some people go with ps3 just because they have blu-ray. Now don't prove me wrong i do love the ps3 graphics i mean their great, but it's still never going to be better than xbox live. Oh and who has more games, straight up xbox 360. Besides on xbox live we can watch Netflix, xbox live has so much more downloadable content than ps network , it has parties, more arcades, the avatars are cooler and xbox 360 can play music while playing games and ps3 can't. And more importantly ps network lags more than xbox live which isn't a googd thing. So the winner would have to be xbox live.

lol, "play and go?" YES! Plus the battery packs have dual towers to charge and takes only about 20-3 min for about a weeks worth of charge.

Not sure what that is yet, but you can download movies off the marketplace and NexFlix watch movies that are 1080p (like blue rays)

no, but who needs it? I have had 10 gigs from day one, sucks everyonce in a while, so ill give it to the console that costs 150-200 dollars more.

IM sick of bias people they all say, "i have a PS3 so its better". everyone believes what they have is better just because they or there parents bought it for them. Every comment against XBOX Live being better is not backed up by a reasonable explanation. XBox live can be bought for $36 for a year at costco orthe BX if you live near one thats basically 9 cents a day. 36 dollars is way less than a days work on almost any job you could make $36 a day at McDonalds. So suck it up the graphics for xbox and PS3 are basically the same if halo or GOW were on PS3 it would look the same and if Infamous or uncharted 2 were on XBOX 360 it would look the same as well. So Basically there is not better physical console but xbox has a better online no matter the cost

i have a ps3 but i have to say that xbl is way better, in psn u lag a lot but when i played xbl i rarely lagged, if the severs connection was better that i would prefer psn cuze of the other stuff but it doesn't have as much as xbl does like its ability to customize many things. if in psn you could customize more i would choose it but until then xbl is better

I have both, the ps3 and Xbox 360. I have played both online. I am not a fanboy of either system. I just like playing them. But I have to say the xb live is way better. You get what you pay for and Xbox live is 50 bucks better than PS network.

I gotta say...I do own both. I love both of them. Ps3 costs more. But microsoft nickel and dimes you to damn near that price for any basic extras (xbl, wi-fi, rechargable batt. packs, HDD/Mic for arcade model). Ps3 is a better console IMO. BUT! Xbl is way better than Psn. It Seems geared to make it easy and fun for gamers to be socil and interact. Cross game voice chat!!! You would think sony would copy that. Maybe when they start charging for their premium service huh? Psn...Seems like, well somethin is better than nothin and its free.

One other difference between Xbl and Psn. This is a pain in the ass. Xbls' updates are short and sweet. Psn, if they have an update, better get it started and go make a sandwhich (including driving to the store for bread). Psn updates download slow and install just as slow. This sucks BTW. I'd rather have more of em than longer ones. And it shows Xbl is always working on things. Prolly why it costs money for the service.

If they did combine, then it would mean that they would take Nintendo out of business, which would mean that they could create a monopoly and charge what ever they wanted for crappy service. I have both, and while I love my PS3, the online sucks. Xbox Live is infinitely easier to navigate, and you can create multi-game parties in a snap. Can't do that with PS3, which is a major issue with a lot of PS3 owners. I'm not sure why Sony sinks so much time into the black hole that PS Home. They need to work on their network capabilities.I agree that PS is better with the actual games themselves, and of course having a Blu-ray player in-unit is awesome. For those fanboys out there on either side; cut that crap out. Both systems have their pros and cons. It really all depends on what you're looking for.

i recently switched from ps3 to 360 because of its constant online faliure and awful seervice, and all i can pretty much say is the 360 is amazing. have a problem with graphics? just save it to your hardrive and games are played in 1080p. have a problem with paying 50 bucks a year for xbox live? then you probably cant afford the ps3 at its high prices. headsets come standard so you can feel the community feel especially in mw2. Ive met some new people and made some new friends on xbox live

Ok well, ya see... XBL is kind of laggy in some ways and the only way that it is better is because lots of people buy it all the time....And then there is the RROD and the YLOD you can have a xbox for 3 years and have 3 or 4 RRod or you could have a ps3 for 3 years and not get the YLOD. I would go with psn because, you have to admit that It is REally good considering that it is WIRELESS online.... the only reason that Xbl would be faster is because they use wires. PSN is awesome, its free, fast, and reliable.... Xbox-pay, kind of laggy sometimes, fast on downloading, has arcade and stuff... Did i mention ps3 got a built in Web browser so you can surf the web... and its even fast too. Its almost like it uses Road Runner. What i am saying is that Xbox is a Awesome GAMING console that will soon die on you so you should enjoy it while you can... and The ps3 is a reliable gaming console taht has more games on the market at this time... its like for every 5 Sony made ps3 games that come out 1 microsoft xbox game comes out.. But the nagain if it wasnt for Microsoft Ps3 wouldnt have the internet Browser. Xbox doesnt get the RROD anymore. Ive had mine for 3 years and not a single RROD. Xbox has media center, which gives me a web browser and online apps. Media Center also give you access to all your pics and music on your computers and network. I prefer wired connection with no NAT problems but the xbox adapter has wireless n and down when ps3 is only b/g. Graphics have never really been my interest. Wow, these 5 PS3 games have amazing graphics and terrible gameplay. Ill stick with a 1 xbox game anyway. People have been constantly playing halo 3 since 2007. Its going to be the same thing next gen when microsoft is first to the party and has an awesome console for sony to grab some ideas. Maybe Sony would come out first, they are probably to afraid of Microsoft. Maybe they could make something cooler than the name "PS4"... Xbox - Xbox 360 is 360 points. PS2-PS3 is one point. Bluray player is an xbox accessorie which I think is a terrible waste of money because Bluray isnt going to last anyway. Flash drives and piracy might destroy everything lol. And I would be so exited about using my sucky psp with the tiny "nub stick" and like 10 buttons. I really like Sony and Microsoft. I would be willing to pick the better next gen console, not a fanboy.

In partys u do stuff together. I can be playing burnout paradise and talking to 6 diffrent people at the same time who are playing diffrent games. then i can invite them to chill with me while i watch a movie on netflix or zune we can watch trailers together movies etc. I can take them to school on mw2 a real match where we get exp because you can go online with partys and play together. I can press input and watch tv with my friends while theyre not even there. I can send voice msgs to offline even pictures. We can video chat XD we can do anything oh yea do i mention that the 39$ we pay goes to bettering the xbl experience and landing exclusives for games. How do you think we get mw2 dlc a month before everyone else because we pay for it. Xbl isnt just online play its everything

I ran across your article and couldn't help but notice a bias in favor of live. you list the free demos, game and movie trailers, game add ons, download-able games, and film rental service separately under xbox live but clump them all together under "download-able content from playstation store" for the PSN side. Why is that?

PSN also has online gaming but you didn't list it for PSN. and you could have easily put "reputation rating" and "gamerscore" under one bullet point for xbox live.

as for the pros and cons "incredible community experience" is more of an opinion. the most incredible experience I've had on xbox live are from kids screaming profanity. and while psn has those types of people too I'd hardly call it an "incredible community experience". and the "sleek interface" is more opinion too. in my opinion the playstation has a cleaner, sleeker interface while the xbox is kind of clunky with too much going on. opinions really shouldn't be included in ratings for articles like this where you're trying to prove which is better. better in your opinion, sure, but i didn't see you point that out in the article.

First of al, i want to merit ps3 for having such a nice system. But xbox live, to me, is worth paying for. Besides, i don't have a ps3, i don't want or need half of it's features. And more of my friends have xboxes; only a couple i know have ps3s.

as i only own an xbox360 system with xbl and have never actually played on the psn this comment could be a little biased. but from what i have been able to find out from researching both sytems is that while the ps3 ofline gaming seems to be better the xbl and the user-friendly functions of the x360 make it the higher quality system.

i've seen people complain that xbl costs but if it is the better solution then it has the right to cost something and $25-$50 is not asking much when you consider that adding this much is still less then the original price for the ps3.

secondly someone said that is is bad that the x360 hasn't got an in-built hard-drive, but they do have a detachable external one that can be up to 120gb and i would rather have an external one so if you want to use another console you can keep all your saved stuff without having to remove the hardrive from inside the console.

as for charging the ps3 controllers on a USB port, it might be a more efficient solution but the batteries will last have as long as 2 AA batteries that are needed in a 360 controller and will soon burn out and need to be replaced.

other then these things both sytems are pretty much identical neither has better graphics its probably just the resolution of the TV you are using.

overall i would stick with the xbox360 but it is prefferable that you get the console that suits you.

ok soooo i will try to be unbiased as possible in my review as much as I can.

ok first off I have both the Xbox 360 and the PS3 and in my opinion they are both really amazing consoles.

first the PS3.

Pro:

I think PS3 is superior than the xbox in many ways such as having free online services,

blu-ray,

usb controllers,

better graphics and processors, and

all the awesome games that are coming out or came out such as final fantasy 13, infamous, killzone 2 killzone 3.

Con:

But many of these pros also come with a con. Free online service or the PSN does not get much support from Sony. This is not the PS3 fault but the fault of the shitty company that made this awesome console :D If they start to actually take their time and work on the PSN and fix glitches and bugs, PSN would be much better than what it is right now. (I hope the PSN does not turn out like Planetside)

The Blu-Ray that comes with the PS3 is awesome and is just a pro.

The USB controller is both a pro and a con as the battery might wear out later. Also the Xbox 360 has the charge and play which charges your controller while you play so that is better in my opinion.

The PS3 also has a built in hard drive which is bad because if your PS3 broke, got stolen, etc, the hard drive is gone with it. Also if you run out of room on the PS3 you are screwed :( But the Xbox 360 has a detachable hard drive allowing you to detach a hard drive when you run out of memory and put in a new one. But this is also a con for the xbox 360 as memory cost ALOT.

Now the better graphic is not a con but in my opinion I think the processor is a con. It is not really a con but Sony could have been more efficient with that 8th processor which might have made the PS3 a much better console than the xbox 360. Also because of the extra worthless processor, you have to pay more because processor cost money..... so you are paying money to get 7 working processor and 1 useless processor... but still better than the xbox 360's 3 processors that are weaker than the ps3's

Now all these games that are coming out are mostly pro but when it comes to multiplayer, it sucks.... it lags, it takes long to update, and there is a lot of bugs and glitches. Now this ties in with the PSN con soooo count this and the PSN as one con.

Now for the Xbox's Pro

The Xbox Live has a very good community compared to the PS3 mostly because Xbox Live is constantly updated to fix glitches and patches and is actually worked on by microsoft while Sony is being a lazy son of a bitch. Also when you buy an xbox, you get a free mic unlike the PS3 where u ahve to actually spend your money to get a mic. I like to go into a room and hear conversations instead of being confronted by silence but this also can turn into a con because of all the bitchy kids on xbl that pisses me off.

Xbox 360 cost less than the PS3 controller cuz they are efficient but the Xbox 360 has the RROD (Red Ring of Death) which can fuck up your controller. This is because Microsoft was too lazy to get off their fat ass and fix the xbox and also because it is "cost efficient" so obviously they dont care about their customers... Fuckers. Now the xbox costing less can also be a con because it shows that the PS3 is a better console but of course this is because the Ps3 was released almost 2 years after the Xbox 360 and during those 2 years, our technology was improved. Also the PS3 is not efficient with their design... stupid 8th processor

Now the Xbox also has a lot of great games that are coming out or that already came out such as the fable trilogy, cod series, halo series, burnout series, tom clancy series, bfbc1 and 2... i can just go down the list but the only reason why most of these games are better than the ps3 is because of their multiplayer.... I mean seriously it all revolves around the multiplayer.

Now some of you guys are probably bitching going like, "oh but the PS3 has some of these games" And yes there are many games that has been ported to the PS3. There is a problem in that though. Because the game was first designed to be played on the xbox 360, and since the PS3 system is different from the xbox, the game that is ported for the ps3 does not even compare to the xbox version of the game. Although few of the games like GTA4 was first made for the PS3 so that is why GTA4 looks so much better and plays so much better on the PS3.

Also to all those PS3 fans that insults Xbox 360 about the RROD... Sure I hate it too I got 2 RROD in like 5 years but Microsoft is improving.... Back when the Xbox 360 came out, the RROD was like 1 in 3 xboxs but now the chance of getting RROD is like 8% which is not that high but still doesnt compare with the PS3 Yellow ring of death (i think it was called?) 1% chance.

Also i dont know about you guys but 1/3 of my friends owns a xbox while 1% of my friend owns a ps3.... soooo I like to play with my friends if you know what i mean

Conclusion: I personally use the PS3 for Single Player and the Xbox 360 for multiplayer... Now if Sony actually fix up their multiplayer... then it will be so much better but for now the Xbox 360 still holds the title of King of Consoles..... I have to say the Xbox 360 is better in my opinion but if you want facts... They are even.

It is quite amusing to me that PS3 fanboys try to compare the PS3 with the Xbox360 because they are 2 YEARS APART!!! Please compare with a system that was released around the time your system was released and because of this and many other pros of the xbox 360..... I have to go with the xbox just because it is sooooooooo impressive how it still stands out today even with the PS3 out. Especially with that new xbox 360 out I am all psyched to get it.

I love how a discussion about which online service is better constantly gets hung up on which console is better. Look at it this way. If you have a brand new Corvette and I have a 20 yr old Chevette and we had a race you'd cross the finish line before I got up to 20mph. Now imagine your Corvette has 3 flat tires. The PS3 may be a higher performance system but when it comes to the quality of the online service it has 3 flat tires.

1) Load times remind me of using the internet in 1999. Sure you can download a 1GB game but you should start it before going to work or bed, it's going to be a while. The Mafia II demo(just over 1GB) took me less than 30 minutes to download on the 360. It takes less than 30 seconds to download and apply a 360 update. 5 minutes plus on PS3.

2) A weak community. Where have all of the gamers gone? And the ones that are on PSN are as silent as the grave.

3) Things to do. XBL has so much more to offer like streaming radio, movies (yes PSN has Netflix but it runs much smoother on XBL) and sports (espn3 is coming soon and exclusively to XBL) Also there are rumors of an exclusive deal with Hulu coming (Might as well have the cable shut off). I can chat with friends while doing something entirely different from them or easily invite them to join almost anything that I'm doing.

What else are people complaining about?

XBL costs $50 dollars a year. That's less than $1 a week. If $0.93 a week is too rich for your blood you shouldn't have a game system in the first place.

PS3 has BluRay. I can stream or download movies in full HD on the 360.

The PS3 has built WI/FI. The 360 has optional wireless N (which is faster and more secure) for the original system and built in WI/FI on the slim.

Built in HDD on the PS3. I can throw my 360's hard drive in my pocket and take all of my gamesaves, movies and 30GB worth of music to my buddies house. The slim has the built in HDD and offers a system with only 4GB (more than enough for gamesaves and a handfull of add-ons) that only costs $200.

You can charge the PS3 controller through the usb. I can charge my 360 controller the same way and the cable that came with it is long enough to still play while I'm charging. Also I can replace my battery when it goes bad.

One more thing. Many of my computer's accessories and 360's accessories are interchangeable.

I'm not trying to argue that the 360 is better, just that the PS3 isn't miles ahead like some of it's fans claim.

ok i have played on both psn and xbox live, xbox live is way better and 2 be fair psn will always play catch up. the xbox membership fee is quite annoying though, £40 is not much but when you think the psn is free you kinda think ps3 . the ps3 as a console is better in my opinion though and once they upgrade the psn it will blow the xbox out of the water. think about it , the only reason xbox has more games and a better system is that it was competing with the ps2 and in some respects the ps2 was pretty good. i think in 2 years or so the ps3 will be King.

ZOMG, seriously, ps3's dashboard is 5billion times easier to navigate than 360. I like both consoles, but i would pick a ps3 ova a 360 coz if u look at the stats, ps3 uses blu-ray and has a faster proccesor but i choose the ps3 over 360 coz it has free online play. if i could hav both i would. and btw ps3 does hav downloadable trailers/demos/themes etc.

Reminds me of trying to give away my old laptop.

When I was offering it for free no one wanted it and thought it was crappy.

After a few months I decided to raise the price to $50, strangely I ended up selling it for $100 because a bid war started.

People seem to think if it costs money it's better. Not true.

who wins is based on the writers opinion...so you cant realy listen to other people beacause they prefer a certaint system. Honestly, I have a PS3 and im getting an XBOX. Half of my friends say XBOX is better and the other half say PS3 is better. My suggestion is you go to your local gamestop (walmart,target,etc.) and you try each. From there you decide which one you prefer and which one your going to get. You be the judge, not these article people because you never know if they favor 1 side over the other.

I would definitely have to say XBL beats out PS3. I'm not some biased douche virgin who has nothing better to do than defend his system to the end or make sure everyone knows his Alienware computer kicks ass. Good for you. I grew up playing PS1 and PS2, and when it came time and I had the extra wad to blow on a system I researched what my friends had. I originally wanted the PS3 but 360 was what all my friends had. I was kinda peeved truth be told when I connected and saw that Live Gold was not free but whatever whats 3-5 bucks a month? for someone it may be the deal maker or breaker but not for me. I borrowed a friend's PS3 just cause I considered buying one. I didn't like the setup to be honest. Not so easy wheras a first timer can breeze thru the menus like an expert in minutes on the 360. Also i found this later but Microsoft bans modded systems, hackers, douche bags that people report and such. Cmon I just wanna play the game the fun honest way. Whats kinda retarded of Microsoft is Microsoft points which is like 1800 for 20 bucks. Why not just have an account in Monetary value versus some stupid made up currency. Also I know I jump a bit but keep in mind, XBL got MW2's map packs a good while before PSN. I'm not biased here I just like my xbox live better. One thing Sony has going for it which pisses me off about microsoft is in a PS3 you can go to Newegg and get a 640GB 7200rpm HDD and throw it in the PS3 which I hear improves things and with Xbox I gotta go and buy some bullshit HDD in a case. One good move of Xbox is the new 360 slim. For those throwing PS3's glssy finish, built in WIFI and no RROD, the slim solves all those problems. Both got their perks and downfalls but as for online ease, options, and downright experience, XBL all the way. If PSN improves and I like it better, so be it but as of now XBL.

I think I made my last post more about systems but really who's going to spend 300+ on a system just cause they read about XBL and PSN? I'm a 360 slim owner which took all 360's physical downfalls and put it on par with PS3, but it DOES need a web browser. Cmon even the Wii has a browser and 360's made by microsoft! Makers of Internet Explorer! Last time I checked Sony didn't design a web browser but they have one in their system...I don't mind paying for XBL cause it is worth it and I don't hate on PSN its just not the better one IMO. Microsoft however needs to get the bug outta their ass and offer the ability to put a 3rd party 500GB +/- 2.5" HDD in and at least come with stock rechargable controllers. Windows, Office and XBL make Bill rich enough, how about being about the consumer and throwing your loyal players a bone with the next system.

Why is XBL like it is, Microsoft Bought Hotmail and made it windows live, Made Windows Live messenger. They have good expirience in comunications and software design. MicroSoft is huge corporation the has big $$$ cuz they charge wack for their software + hardware.

Otherhand Sony is a newcommer in the software game. They suck at software making, no expirience in comunication whatso ever. BUT they are improving slowly. i own me PS3 they got PSN Plus now, with good service.

I want to see Microsoft make a better 3D TV then sony, or a BETTER Blueray player then the sonys.

Sure now we have online play, but many games (Racing games?,FPS,and more) just do not allow for local play (split screen) with your friends. That means people end up taking turns or just go back home to their own system. That is not an improvement. Likely it is a choice made by the developers to cut back. Black Ops is a great example of this. I don't care at all about the Zombie mode that is unlocked. It is just not as good as the single player and has the quality of an Xbox Live Arcade downloadable game. To get back to the point, Developers are the ones who are going to make the different. The hardware is not the deciding factor IMO.

PSN Is free, it has Playstation Home which is a giant MMO sort of like The Sims. You can download arcade games and ps1 games as well. There is a lot less lag than Xbox Live, and the games usually have more players online. Like how Halo ca only have 16 players per game, Resistance can have 40. And MAG is going to have 256 players per game.

Xbox Live costs $50 a year, the lag is horrible, there cannot be very many players per game, but you can download arcade games and original xbox games.

Anyone who thinks the PSN is even a credible online alternative to XBL needs to sit down and rethink their life. I own both consoles and have struggled with the PS3 online abilities for years until I recently got my Xbox 360 and couldn't believe the vast gulf between the two.

You can buy a game for the PS3 and wait half an hour to download the update (yes I do have a decent connection thanks) and then another half an hour to download it to your hard drive that often makes no difference. 1 Hour wait to play a game you just shelled out a load of money for! Not to mention the complex navigation system and the way every little thing you want to do on there takes ages. I almost forgot about the controller! What a piece of crap! The PS3 has GT5, possibly the most realistic driving sim out there on consoles and the PS3 controller doesn't even have triggers to control how much you open your throttle and how hard you brake! How is this thing in the shops?!?! X and Square for a driving simulator?? Give me Forza anyday

I believe Ps3 will be much better in a few months or years because it has so much mor potential. X-box is already maxed out with their upgrades and capabilities. A good analogy is having a pie eating contest. The ps3 is like a grizzly bear who just had its tounge pierced. Its mouth is infected and it just can't eat like it will be able to in the future. The x-box is like your fat uncle. He can eat more pie now, but soon the grizzly bear will be able to eat more pie, the table, and the fat uncle all at the same time. Ps3 is coming and X-box (which was originally a copy of sony's products anyway) will be second class once again... In case you are wondering, it will be the same for PSN; just give it some time. What's the hassle, XBL has dedicated servers which has a 5% chance of lagging while the PS3 puts up with Software servers which shutdown if there is a overload if 10,000 players try to play a game with children online. Also when you buy a PS3 they don't offer you anything just a PS3 a controller, VGA cable, Charging cable. Xbox gives you the Xbox 360S, award winning controller, VGA/HDMI cable built in, Headset, 3 months subscription. Paying approx $40 just for XBL is worth it, i'm guessing people you complain about the price are little children who don't get pocket money. PS3 console prices are far too high for what they offer. XBL also offer full online support and you can talk to them live if there is anything wrong. PS3 yellow light of death ratings are increasing, to keep these numbers down think about how you treat your console when you lose a game. (Not the end of the world)

Also the XBL community is much wider than the PSN community due to the fact that when on XBL you can party chat and you can have conversations online without paying approx.$15-$20 for a headset. Also what effect does Blu-Ray have against HDMI just a sharper image for $350 doesn't seem worth it. You can buy a new Xbox 360S and a Blu-Ray player for less than a PS3.

I currently have an xbox360 and i am very happy with it. My good friends have xbox and live. I have talked to them and it sounds fine. From doing some reading psn is great but only if you have a great router. I have a seperate router that does my wifi for live and i needed to change a nat setting to make live faster. One thing i like about live is that you can report people, avoix people, like people, rep and zones. This makes it nice to have more control if your a parent or a someone who only likes to be with certian kind of people. Also the live party is a nice feature so you can play a game with your friend online and in private. Although you both have to have a game disc. To conclude this I am very happy with my 360 and live. I belive the main reason is that i have friends that are on live and the service is great. If my friends did not have 360s then i would of gone to ps3 becuse some of my friends are on there to. I would have been happy either way

Why we buy gaming consoles? For gaming.. then? Why wouldn't we get a good online service? Because we're too dumb to pay 50 bucks per 1 year which means 365 days which means 50/365=0.13$ per day Lol that's almost free. And yeah I don't own an xbox currently but I bought a ps3 in december 2010 and I regret now cause when I want to play online.. Black ops- (i live in europe) 2 people/18 with mics and Medal of honor- 0/12 So it pretty much sucks. And ppl with mic are generally more fun than a silence death. I had seen before I got my ps3 that the xbox has more let's say "pro/try hard/competitive" gamers and on ps3 I get 27-4 on B.O when other get 15-5. I really will do the switch but will keep ps3. I want the online to have a big good community and people have mics (not a problem if they have the Ms headset from the xbox). Mic raises the fun with 1000%. PS3 sucks and sony is a disappointment because they had not change the conotrller, menu, psn, since 2006 :) (the controller since 2000) Multiplayer= fun Offline and stuning graphics with blu-ray and shit online= sick and a deathly silence which pretty much sucks for 260 pounds :) Xbox is the way( the new slim ofc) Microsoft the best! for the xbox memory issue, you can attach ANY usb external harddrive and use it for xbox live memory.

for the controllers, they sell wired xbox controllers, no batteries required, play and charge kits works well, PS3 owners need to use short cables to charge or buy another controller to swap out to keep playing.

now before you PS3 fanboys flip out, I had a PS3, while I had an xbox, and I only kept that PS3 for a month then quickly sold it. I hated the headset, it was uncomfortable, and to charge it, I had to stick it on that tiny cable and shut it off. Sending a message took FOREVER, and I made only 3 friends cause they shelled out the money for a bluetooth headset to talk in game. THE LAG THE LAG THE LAG!! I hated the lag it bothered me so much. I'll admit there was nice graphics, but when it came down to fun, I only enjoyed 2 games, little big planet, and MGS4, both only for the singleplayer. Multiplayer was laggy, and no one talked, and when anyone joined, it was some little kid who just wanted to ruin my game somehow online. I've seen the PS3, I've played about 12 games on it, and I only liked 2 of them, so I sold it.

I prefer xbox live over PSN, and don't complain on the pricetag, buy an xbox, you get gold one month for free on xbox live when you make a profile, WHICH YOU CAN DO OVER AND OVER again, like all the other poor little kids with no money, but when you do, the xbl dashboard has offers for gold memberships for MUCH less than retail price, so you can easily get into it at a fraction of the cost.

I'll stop there and I apologize for rambling, but I felt I needed to say something. Stop being fanboys, and just listen instead of posting if you haven't seen both sides of the coin.

Right ok Psn is more money which is easier to hack because basically they dont give 2 shits and my friends says there is lots of glitches (may be positive or negative). Im not gonna lie.. the first console.i bought was the ps3 i was so happy at first connecting to any available hotspot around my house. Downloading demos overnight and browsing the web... Trying to play against my friends was bad there were glitches all over... Connection was slow... I hated the ps3s controller specially the fukked up triggers lol... Well one day i decided to trade it for an xbox 360 to see what i was missing and trust me i was missing a lot... Im not gonna tell u everything i like about it but the best thing that i like bout it is the controller and the perfect triggers... Scince i mostly play fps... Well back to the topic... I would never go back to psn from xbl just because of the experience i had with both... Xbox360 wins in my opinion... Thabk you and have a good time gaming on either console.. the choice is yours.... ;)

overall i think they are both pretty much level they both have there ups and downs! but saying this i do think when xbox get the rights to be able to add the blue ray player (when sony decide to sell some of the rights) i do think that the 360 will push ahead slightly.

XBL is just better. I have both consoles in my home and there are just so many little things that makes the xbl blow away psn.

Multiple players online from one console. I mean multiple xbl accounts online at the same time playing MW3 or Halo. Each person gets to level up their individual gamer account while playing together. If you have kids or like to play with a gf/wife then this is awesome.

Add to that the fact that both the players can have a headset at the same time. Oh my. PSN/PS3 simply cannot do either of those things and that just sucks. If you have more than one online gamer in the house then xbl is the way to go.

I've seen all kinds of crazy PS3 nonsense like "better graphics." The graphics on the xbox are better for nearly every single multi platform game. CoD, AC, Skyrim......on and on it goes. The graphics look better and the gameplay is just smoother on an xbox because the developers hate to develop games on the ps3 so the do the game on for the xbox first and then port over to ps3 which means (95% of the time) the game looks and plays better on an xbox if it is a multiplat game.

Slims have Wi-fi.....superior wifi to the PS3. You are still better off hard wiring them though. Wi-fi increases your ping. Real gamers know what I'm talking about.

Party chat is a big deal. When I want to play with pals on the ps3, I start by picking up my cell phone and text messaging them. It would be funny if it wasn't so sad. I can get a party going on xbox and get into a game (we can all chat about it together prior to deciding while doing our own thing) fast on xbl. It is a nightmare on psn.

Then there is the controller. I fixed that though. I bought an aftermarket controller for the PS3 that was adult sized and laid out like the xbox controller. If you are wondering which controller is better then look at the aftermarket options for PS3/XBOX. You will not find a PS3 style controller for the xbox. You can find dozens of xbox style controllers for the PS3. Reason being is because the xbox controller is awesome just like it is and the PS3 controller layout is inferior. Hence, third parties copy the xbox controller for ps3 use but never the other way around.

PS3 has more exclusives but the xbox exclusives are better. Nothing can tough Halo, Gears and Forza. More isn't better. Quality over quantity.

I pay 7 cents a day for xbox live. It is worth every penny. And it costs just pennies per day anyway.

I didn't buy a gaming system to watch blu-ray. I bought a gaming system to play games. I really bought it to play multiplayer games online. That is how I really use the systems. Online gaming on the xbox is just better than on the ps3. It makes perfect sense because you pay to play on xbox live and psn is free.

If you rarely play online multiplayer and you want to start(or have) a collection of blu-ray movies then the PS3 is a good choice.

If you are like most gamers today and your gaming is 75% online and 25% single player then the xbox is the better choice.

When people talk about graphics, they are talking about the graphics on the actual games. They aren't talking about DVD vs. blu-ray. On real games, the xbox does it better on nearly all multiplatform games. I know because I have CoD: MW3 for both. I have Black Ops for both. I have about 10 games on both platforms. Every single one looks better on the xbox. Most aren't that noticeable honestly. They just look a tad bit better on the xbox. It is because the games were ported from xbox to the ps3. Has nothing to do with hardware. But the end result is what it is.....multiplats look/play better on the xbox.

There is a downside to the blu-ray that people should keep in mind. The xbox dvd drive loads 6 times faster than the blue-ray player. Yep, 6 times as fast. Also, you do not have to have some sort of pre-install on the xbox. It can play straight from the dvd drive (because it reads faster than a blu-ray drive). The PS3 has to do some sort of partial install to the HD on most of my games for it. The blue-ray just can't read fast enough to play games straight from it. For this reason, I prefer the dual layer dvd drive to the blu-ray drive. Like I said, I don't watch blu-rays. I watch movies via streaming or I DVR them from a service like on demand. Buying a dvd/blu-ray copy of a movie never was my thing.

Xbox live has slowly been gaining steam over the years with Kinect support and now exclusive apps that the PSN doesn't. If Sony takes their system seriously and caters to it's fanbase, maybe then would competition be fierce. I wouldn't mind subscribing to PSN if the content I'd be getting rivals Xbox live. I love both consoles and would like to see fans of both get equal love from developers!!!

Ive got both consoles but I honestly have to say the xbox is the better one. Xbox has things like xbox live parties where you can talk with up to 8 (I beleive) other people no matter what your doing. The xbox also only takes one hit of a button to go straight to any messages you've received, friend requests, invites, etc. Also whith every xbox theres is a headset so many people online will be communicating. There are many more things the xbox has, including having recently released youtube and bing. The xbox is better for online play whilst the ps3 I think wins in the offline and has blueray, but the ps3 does have much more than just that. The arguments about the xbox rrod are invalid because I've had mine for more than 3 years and havent had one yet, and also the ps3 has the yellow light which sets the consoles off the same on that. Once again I say that the xbox wins for online, Its only 60$ a year which isnt much while ps3 is free. Its like paying more for more quality.

Both consoles have their pros and cons. I have had my PS3 now for just over 2 years and i have had no real problems with it.

People are saying that their downloads (on the ps3) are slower compared to the xbox, well in the end it comes down to your internet speed. I downloaded a 10 Gb game from the PS Store in about 30 minutes and i had no problem waiting that long for it.

When it comes to graphics, its not only your console that determines how the game looks, but also your tv.Yes some say that ps3 has better graphics card and others say that the xbox 360 has better graphics card, but if you have a shit tv then you will have shit graphics and if you have a good tv then you will have good graphics.

When it comes to the headset, if you don't like the stock ones then go and get yourself a proper one and stop complaining about how uncomfortable it is or how its only compatible via Bluetooth (for ps3). If you are into the whole online chat, then you would want a headset that feels comfortable to you and has settings that you can adjust on the fly (like game sound vs chat sound)

Yes, psn is free and xbox live isn't, but that doesn't mean that just because xbox live isn't free that its better. I have had some issues with lag with the psn and yes it can be annoying, but my friend has an xbox 360 and he has lag with the xbox live as well. They both do lag on occasions, and yes i am saying on occasions because it only happens to me on occasions.

When it comes to the ps being hacked, yes it was pretty much a disaster, but the xbox 360 has been hacked in the past as well. It doesn't matter how much security someone (person or company) has they will be hacked eventually, and you xbox fans don't say it wont happen to you cause xbox has wap2 security and the psn only had wep security cause the CIA webpage got hacked and I'm sure they don't have wep security. And when everyone is complaining about their credit card details being stolen, if your so worried about it, don't put them online. It's that simple. I have never paid for anything using my credit card. I go out and buy the gift cards and use them because i don't want to have my credit card details on any website in case they get hacked, not just psn.

When it comes to the hard drive, if you don't like the one in your console, then go and get yourself an external hd, its that simple.

One thing i will say that sides with PS3 is that all PS3 games come with 1 disk, where as some (not all) xbox 360 games come with multiple disks. This can be annoying.

If anyone wants to comment on anything i have said feel free, all I will say is back it up! I am sick of reading one line comments that say PS3 is better or XBOX 360 is better.

It just depends on what your friends have and how you are going to do with it. It you don't play online ps3 is probally better. If you play casually why spend money on live to not get much use out of it.

Also people complain about silence on ps3;

1) if you play with friends with mics that doesn't happen.

2) do you really want to listen tO listen to random people.

3) is silence a bad.

Also you say ps3 online is alot worse than xbl but do you have any proof. Also alot of these "problems" don't matter for example is a game takes longer to update. Does it really matter if you lose a few games. And can you not go do something else.

I only have a 360. I bought it just for online gaming and it is easily the winner for a hardcorish gamer to play online (pc is for the most hardcore). All my friends were also on it which helped with my decision making too.

I only hear stories about how much worse psn is than live, so I can't testify to that.

To answer ur question 2 Guy, I love listening to random kids screaming at me cause I killed them. It is always fun for me to listen to them go on and on about how I supposedly have a modded controller. Not everybody on there is good to listen to. I just about always mute those that haven't hit puberty yet. I don't know how difficult or tedious of a task it is to do that on psn, but it is only a few seconds to do on live.

There r pros and cons to both, and both have systems more suitable for certain people. To me I prefer live over psn, and that is y I chose to purchase my 360.

I've played both, as have many in here, and I have to say it's xbl. Psn feels like they stopped early and just threw in some half-assed menu because they needed it done. They don't update it, which could easily fix the interface problems, and the download times are much much longer. To "Guy" your third question, yeah I could go do something else, but then why did I get on a system if I wanted to do something else? Also, and I saw some of the dates being 2+ years ago, but the new xbox 360 has built in wifi, internal hard drive, kinda liked the external better but oh well, and could always use a cord to charge controllers while playing. Psn's actual live play? It's not bad, haven't noticed too much of a difference between Psn and Xbl. To be honest, the game MAG is why I got the PS3. It is now the only reason I play, but it was a rather cheep per quality blue ray player.

I have played both PS3 and 360 and I have more problems with my PS3 then any other system I have ever owned. I took greet care of it then it stooped working Sony said it was either our sound system or TV and guess what they were made by Sony also (they then realized they had failed) my 360 has broken once mainly because of me not turning it off in the middle of a heat wave. The PSN store is a pain with money being if you want to add money you had to put in a password and they said it was incorrect and I typed it in exactly how it's been since day one. 360 I can find things easy and I just get Microsoft points. Now my biggest problem with PSN are hackers I have quit so many match's because of some noob hacking making them selves off the map (also mind you psn shutdown for I forget how long due to hackers.) 360 is impossible to hack and if you do you get banned fairly quickly. The last problem is the updates PSN's updates take so long I fall asleep during one of there updates 360 takes a minute or less depending one what is being fixed. Overall I say PS3 sucks X box 360 rules.

I can honestly say I love both machines and I do own both. Although I disagree with many of your cons for the PS3. Since when is it better to have to pay 60 bucks a year to play online games then paying nothing at all. And some one else mentioned that Xbox has another leg up because of having netflix??? I have a feeling that some of you who say the Xbox is the winner by a mile, I think you need to actually try using the ps3. 7 times out of 10, I buy my games on PS format. There also wasn't mention of the exclusives race. Xbox has nearly no exclusives, and the Playstation has many. Uncharted, for one, has been named game of the year. I tried Halo when I got my Xbox and I really couldn't see what was so special about that game. Just another generic shooter...alas I will leave you with those faults. I think people just need to stop having this debate. They are both incredible machines that make me very happy:)

Now I have read many comments about both sides and I do only have an Xbox 360 but i have seen the PSN in action at relatives houses and its menu's and sub-menu's (from what I recall) and I do have to say that online play Xbox beats out PS3, and offline play it depends on what games you like to play.

The game systems that I grew up with were the PS1 and the Game Boy Advance (I was born in 1994). The PS1 had okay titles for little kids but there was always the Pokémon games that Nintendo had for the GBA. Now the systems after that were the Gamecube, Xbox and PS2. On Gamecube more Pokémon and Mario Kart Double Dash.The only games that I played on Xbox were Fable lost chapters, Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic/2 and Star Wars Battlefront 2. The games that I played on PS2 were Star Wars Battlefront and Star Wars Battlefront 2.

Though the differences between the 2 Star Wars Battlefront 2's were slight the Xbox had a faster saving time because it's internal hard drive and not a memory card. That is when I became more of a Xbox person over a PS person.

Now for some pro's that PS has over Xbox 360 in the gaming aspect: in numbers graphics(in reality this depends on your t.v.), processor and some other hardware that I forgot the names to. More exclusive games. (However this is more like "what would you rather have Master Chief or 1000 grunts" if you said 1000 grunts you my friend are a PS person, if you don't know what either of these are you either a) have never played or even heard of the Xbox series Halo or b) a PS only gamer. If you truly don't understand that reference then how about Snake vs. whoever he fights and all of that person's grunts or my personal favorite Yoda vs. 1000 droids. Xbox is about the quality of their exclusive games (although Fable has been lacking sense Fable 2 was released). And my final pro for PS3 is the upcoming release of Dust for those people who play EVE online this will help them out a lot.

For Xbox pros' these include a more stable online experience, better quality of their exclusives(as explained above), Operating System and navigation to things is user friendly and great for masters and novices alike, and soon Minecraft now imagine how many Minecraft downloads are going to happen once it is released to the public.

Now I did not bring into this dispute Kinect vs. PS move because Kinect tracks your movement where as PS move is a WII-mote who's magnetic sensor (a sort of digital "compass" that uses the Earth's magnetic field to determine the controller's orientation) could change if the earth's magnetic field were to shift.

Please if you have any comments about this post with my name as a @equalizer sort of thing so that if I look back at this page I know that you people read what rant I had with this.

Oh and the only reason why I am reading all of this and have this much input is because I have a project due soon and me and my friend are doing Xbox 360 vs. PS3 and vise-versa (I am on the Xbox 360 side).

i bet over half these comments about xboxs sucking are because you have to pay 50 for a year of live and 50 for adaptor the 360 is only 150 plus the additional 100 which is 250, 50 dollars less than ps3.

Plus ps3 does not come with a free mic, and there communications on psn are very low

P.S. xbox 360 is better in my opionion cause i do not need a console to get on the internet when i have a laptop !

Don't forget: PS gamers need to buy a new PS every 3-4 years... My 360 is one of the oldest around, and I play BF3 without a problem. Even my graphics are up to date. I could buy a new console but the only benefit would be that it would be more silent, that there's a HDMI port and that there's a wireless Internet receiver in it... at The fact that the Xbox keeps itself up to date all the time definitely makes it worth your money.

Just a few comment about previous posts.

Some one mentioned about more host migrations on PS3. I don't know about Xbox but on ps3s host migration is because the host has lost connection which is normally because the host has rage quit.

Also there are comments that ps3 exclusives are rubbish, have you guys ever played any of them. Uncharted, infamous, resistance to name but a few. Although I have never played any Xbox exclusives I understand are ok but do they stand out , halo seems to be like any other fps, fable seems to be quite unique but it overall exclusives on Xbox at least seem to someone like me worse than playstation exclusives.
